Suggestions??? - 2008/07/03 18:54 The discussion around here has been fairly quiet recently, apart from a few minor issues reported (and fixed!).

Are there any major new features that could be implemented to make SwissCenter even better than it already is? We've had a few really nice additions in the past few months such as RSS feeds and TV series, is there anything along these lines that would enhance the feature set? I can think of one but I'd like to hear what you users would like.

Basically the current task list only contains minor changes and nothing to get really excited about. At the moment I can see the next couple of release being rather bland compared to what we've had recently. Need suggestions!!!

Before I start on this I have to finish my Hardware Profiles feature as this will allow us to define what each player can play natively, and the rest should be transcoded.

I'll be lookin at transcoding for the 1.23 release so a couple of months down the line yet.

I was using/testing an extended Oxylbox version , which can be found in the Networked Media Tank Forum. This version was a userproject and the purpose was to have a streaming software especially for the popcorn A-100 - but it also worked for the Showcenter. This project now has stopped. Some Ideas which may are usefull: Music: It may be possible to show based on the Last FM Data some statistics like weekly charts (how often a song was played during the last week) or total charts (how often a song was played since added). An other thing also based on the last FM Data could be an similiar artist button. I think a biography of the band based on the LastFM data is not necassairy because of the wikipedia feature It would be a good thing to have the possibility to go to the next track during the LastFM radio mode. This is somehow possible, because the extended oxylbox version I mentied had this feature... An other thing the mentied oxylbox version had was the possibilty to record songs from either shoutcast or LastFM Radio. But these feature needs the streamripper software... Internet: An Electronic Program Guide (EPG) would also be a nice feature. The oxylbox for exemple took the data from the TV-Movie website. The problem is, that for exemple germans need other tv station than Italians... That means that different websites had to be implemented to make this work... Don't know if this were a good idea (because of the quality), but what about a Youtube-Plugin. For exemple one was able to see the newest or most viewed viedeos... Music: A lookup for the lyrics. For exemple in MediaMonkey together with Minilyrics one is able to download and show the lyrics of a mp3 file. The lyrics can be in a .txt file or in a .lrc file. The second one is also with timestemps, this means that a kind of karaoke is possible....

This is already on the todo list as Ticket #36, not difficult to do so I'll give it some thought. It wouldn't use a txt file but rather take the description from the IPTC/XMP tag (which we already store).

Music: A lookup for the lyrics.
There's nothing we can do with this. Even if we had the lyrics we cannot display them on-screen in time with the music.

here are my suggestions (in the order of wishing):

1. What's new screen on the main screen.

I have loved this in the Pinnacle ShowCenter application.
It shows all the new Videos, Photo Albums and Music Albums in one screen.
When I use the MediaPlayer often I would like to use the new Medias.
I know that I can open each section use a filter and see the 7 days old, 14, days old, etc. Media, but that is a not the same.
A "what's new" screen should show the last 8 entries and stay there until new media is found in the database. That should be restricted to Photo Albums / Music Albums (only the Album Name) and Videos. No RSS feeds, etc.

2. use keys 0 and 9 for page up/down

I'm using a Remote Control from my Yamaha AV Receiver that has all key I need to manage all my Hi-Fi Components, but it has no page up/down keys.
It would be nice, if the key 0 could be assigned to page up and the key 9 could be assigned to page down. As all list have only 8 entries that would not interfere with other functionality and seams to be very easy to implement. (but I'm not a PHP developer)

3. valuation system and play counter for music

It would be nice to have a valuation system in the Web Config Application and play counter for all played music.
With this information it would be possible to generate auto play lists like "highest valuation", "most played music", "never played music", "play all new music"

4. Thumbnail view for Photo albums

It would be nice if I could open a photo album (not the directory view) and browse through thumbnails, select one and press play to start with this picture the photo album, stop again, browse through next thumbnail page and view next picture.

5. Music albums in sort order of the album

I you play the entire albums it plays in the correct order.
I you would select a title, that list is displayed in alphabetical order.
That makes sense if you are searching for a title, but makes no sense if you would like to start with the 3 title on the CD.

6. Video overview with pictures

I would be nice to have a view, where you can see the video JPG files with only the title to select one.

BTW, I like the ShowCenter very much and I'm using it each day, but the first and second wish, would help very much for a better usage.

In Expert Options goto Edit The Database and paste the following into the SQL box:

insert into tvid_prefs (player_type, tvid_sc, tvid_default, tvid_custom) values ('PINNACLE', 'PGUP', 'PGUP', 'KEY_0');
insert into tvid_prefs (player_type, tvid_sc, tvid_default, tvid_custom) values ('PINNACLE', 'PGDN', 'PGDN', 'KEY_9');

then Execute SQL. This should change the key mappings for you.

6. Video overview with pictures
You can already do this when browsing videos by filesystem. When browsing select Thumbnail view. Player : Netgear EVA700 & Popcorn A-100 (081106)

Re: Suggestions??? - 2008/07/08 13:32 I've seen it asked before, but iso/img playback wasn't an option right? Can anyone tell me why it's not possible? At the moment I run another server alongside SC that does play ISO and IMG-files, no questions asked. True, it doesn't show the menu, but you can skip through the chapters and use the subtitles. I use quite an old player (TransGear one) and apparently it can technically do that...

Besides this, awesome program by the way!

where SOLUTION:Movies is my SMB share and Cloverfield.iso the movie. See also here

The only drawback is the fact that the share needs to be mounted. So you have to select the share only once from the media services menu. I'm trying to find a way to mount the share using php. SwissCenter 1.21.1

Hi Nigel,

I've tried this, but the ShowCenter still shows "invalid" if I press 0 or 9. I've tried with my AV Receiver and original Pinnaple Remote Control.

The PHC shows nothing when pressing 9, but shows the 0 and does nothing.

Any idea?

And now i am on the search for a new client, and i think i found it with SC. I read this thread and i have to say that some suggestions are very nice. Espacially from duden und NX70 Audio the counter would be nice, so that you can get your own favs playlists Audio the lastfm charts would be also nice.... Audio/Video a sub categorie with the newest entries. So for example the 10 newest albums of the last 7 Days. Video A random video system, so it should be combined with the counter. So the System should say "Dear USER, what about the Movie called....". This should be a Movie that wasn´t seen befor and with the highest imdb ranking. I know its only a gimmick, but how often i sit on sundays in front of my tv and i don´t know what to see.... ( i have a large video collection ) Video a combination of duden´s suggestion---> for examble on ofdb.de you get a list when will the movie been played on free tv-channels. This could also been controlled by a large tv-guide-page. So i think everybody here has a large video collection but i think there are still some movies missing. So there should be a reminder. Not possible due to limitations of the hardware - the media players operate in either "browse" mode or "playback" mode and it's not possible to combine them. Player : Pinnacle Showcenter 200 and 1000 (wired ethernet)

A quick summary...

Audio the counter would be nice, so that you can get your own favs playlistsWe already count number of times a media file is played so this is a possiblility.

Audio the lastfm charts would be also nice....Depends on whether this info is retrievable from LastFM. There are already other LastFM enhancements on the todo list.

Audio/Video a sub categorie with the newest entries. So for example the 10 newest albums of the last 7 Days. You can already do this with the 'Filter' button on the 'Browse by' selection pages.

Video a combination of duden´s suggestion---> for examble on ofdb.de you get a list when will the movie been played on free tv-channels. This could also been controlled by a large tv-guide-page. So i think everybody here has a large video collection but i think there are still some movies missing. So there should be a reminder. I say my friend i want to look for example "the legend of Bagger Vance" and he should remind me about 5 days befor, the movie will be shown on friday on RTL at..... so i can prog my hoply integrated VCR on SwissCenter and my collections grows.This would be alot of effort and quite complicated.

When scrolling through movie titles (or other lists), you can use the triangle buttens (on the web-interface or on the remote) to go up a title in the list or go down 1 title in the list.

Going down page by page, once your get to the final title in the list (a title starting with a "Z") there is no triangle button below the list to go further down.
This seems logical because there are no titles any more.

It would be nice however to add this button anyway.
Pressing it would bring you directly to the top of the list again (titles starting with an "A'). Advantage is speed. If you want to go back to the top of the list when you are on the bottom page this only requires one button to be pressed/clicked.

Similar for the first title in the list: Add a triangle button above first title. By pressing this, one would jump directly to the last title on the last page of the list.

This same function could be applied to the page up/page down button on the remote. Once you are at the last page, pressing the page down button would bring you directly to the top page. And vice versa.

This function is very common in menu's of lists. SwissCenter 1.20.1

Re: Suggestions??? - 2008/08/08 06:50 How about a feature for streaming mp3's and album art as video stream? There are several tools that can make a video of your jpg's, so I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to do it on the fly. This would once and for all solve the popcornhour problem with the refreshing screen, and further more, would eliminate the long pauses between songs in playlists if done cleverly. When you skip to the next song, however, there would have to be buffering. You could also have cool animations instead of a static backgrounds.

And first of all I would like to see the divx-problem with studdering and artifacts solved. (Yes, I have downloaded SwissCenter package (6M

, and yes, my movies play fine with other http-servers like Llink, myiHome etc..)

This is already fixed, you need to wait for the next PCH firmware release.

Re: Suggestions??? - 2008/08/08 21:13 I have a suggestion. It would be nice to eliminate the alphabet that appears on the left when searching for media. I would instead prefer to use the number keys on the remote (similar to text messaging). This would allow you to do so much more with the real estate on the screen (perhaps a "mini" sypnosis of the highlighted media). However, this would somewhat change how we currently use SC. Currently, the number keys are to select options from the right. To implement what I'm describing, that functionality would be lost. You would have to scroll through those options with the up/down arrow. The only drawback would be for users who use SC on PCs (if there are any). I've never used it to view from a PC so I'm not sure if you can scroll with the keyboard.

Due to the limitations of the hardware this doesn't work too well. It's possible, but there are compromises that have to be made which end up (IMHO) being more inconvienient:

1 - If we're talking of predictive text style, then as each number can relate to 3 or 4 letters in the alphabet the queries needed to retrieve matching media from the database would be much more complex and much slower - leading to a very sluggish feeling when using the UI.

2 - If we're not talking about predictive text, but multiple taps (pressing 2 three times for a "C" for example) would mean that the hardware will send a request to the player each time the key is pressed... and you'd have to wait for the screen to refresh before pressing the key again. Again, this makes the UI sluggish and much slower that the on-screen keyboard.

3 - You could have a search box, which means multiple presses would work as expected, but the screen wouldn't dynamically update as you enter your search criteria. I'm not sure about others, but I prefer to have the list refine as you enter letters.

4 - A "mini-synopsis of the highlighted media" isn't possible on most players (the exception being the new Popcorn/NMT based players) as there's no javascript support in the built-in browser.

However - using the text based entry (as in point 3) might be a nice extra feature to add as an alternative for searching as it would be faster to input longer searches. I'll have a play around and see how well it works.

For my taste I would really miss the alphabet, I definitely prefer to have the alphabet available in comparision to SMS-type editing.

This is pretty much what I was referring to. I was thinking more of scrolling up and down the list and not refreshing a new page after each letter selection. I envision that the entire media list loads. From there you would scroll up and down the list according to key presses. As you have stated, this may be beyond the limitations of older hardware. I'm using a Remote Control from my Yamaha AV Receiver that has all key I need to manage all my Hi-Fi Components, but it has no page up/down keys.
It would be nice, if the key 0 could be assigned to page up and the key 9 could be assigned to page down. As all list have only 8 entries that would not interfere with other functionality and seams to be very easy to implement. (but I'm not a PHP developer)

no question, all listed remote controls look very good and would solve my problem with the up/down key. Currently I own additional to the PCH, ShowCenter and the Yamaha remote a Kameleon 6 (first generation) and some more.

But the Yamaha AV-R 1700 Remote Control does everything very good, except that it has the page up/down only for the TV channels.

So I thought that it would be easy to define the keys somewhere in the code or a mapping table. I have tried the hint from Nigel, but that does not work.

Can you give me some hints were to search (code, etc,) to define the 0 as up key and the 9 as down key?

Unfortunately the 0 key can't be bound to anything. I think it's a bug in the firmware (the syabas documentation indicates that it should work) but I don't know if it only affects Pinnacle showcenters or all players.

Nigel's hint should have worked as it changes the key binding that SwissCenter outputs for the page up/down links to be the KEY_0 and KEY_9 keys.

Try these instead:

I even tried assigning pgdn to '5', but I guess that gets overridden somewhere.
Any other suggestions? I would very much like to have especially page down. Are there other ways to fix this?
