From your logfiles I can see that you are getting ALL categories with 1.20.1 but I still don't see how from the code, and it doesn't make sense that reverting video_search to 1.20 would fix anything.
When you select a Category are you still getting the Database Error message?
The database error is actually misleading as it really means it's trying to get something from the PHP SESSION but there's nothing to retrieve. The selected category is stored in the session and I think it's losing it somehow.
Take a look at this thread and compare your session settings in your php.ini, then report back.
