PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/20 07:15 Hi,
@Nigel: Are you still with me? And does this help ?

(i copied this from the New PCH-A200 Thread since it didnt belong there...)

Both us and Syabas know there are issues using SwissCenter with the latest C200 firmware. There is no current solution to this problem as I don't have a C200.

When I have access to a C200 or A200 then I'll be able to investigate and hopefully inform Syabas of where the problem lies.

I know that is a far more complicated way, but i am more then willing to help!
tell me what you need to investigate and where to look and i'll try to provide you with all the information that you need... (e.g. might a wireshark dump be of any help ???)

i havent tried at home yet, but since you asked if myhome still works and someone wrote it does, i had a quick look to see what it does differently and what i noticed is this:

The playlist myihome sends to the player looks like this
Code:

 MVI_0953_2|0|0|http://127.0.0.1:8000/action/playvideo.jsp?id=0&ext=.avi|

as you can see myihome uses a player page instead of sending the url to the file like sc does.

When accessing this url from the browser i get a reply of Content-Type: video/x-msvideo...

so this could already explain why myihome still works?!

Hope this helps, if you want anything tried, i'm right here waiting

Greetings
KMan

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/20 07:42 Thanks for starting a new thread

The myiHome playlist is effectively the same as SC, we just form it differently. Can you confirm that videos still work and it's only music and photos that are broken?

With music and photos we use stream.php to pass file contents to the player, whilst with video we pass the file location and let the player do the streaming. I would suspect that stream.php is not strictly following the HTTP streaming protocol.

A wireshark dump from both SC and myiHome would be useful but tedious to troubleshoot and I don't have much time at the moment. I do have an A200 on order so I'd prefer to wait until I receive it to investigate.

n.p., you're welcome

i know, i didnt mean the playlist format itself, i was talking about the fact that myihome passes a streaming page within itself instead of the file location...

Can you confirm that videos still work and it's only music and photos that are broken?

I will need to install myihome on my notebook and reflash the new firmware, as soon as i have enough time to play around to confirm, i have downgraded to the old version, since my wife is used to sc and wont be happy if she's stuck with another server
But i'll try asap

i can tell you for sure while sc is running on simese videos are NOT working for me with the January Firmware (havent tried photos nor music though)
Will also look into that asap

the tedious is unavoidable with a dump so i clearly see your point, i waited for my c-200 more then 3 months, hopefully you'll have more luck with the a200. If i find enough time, i'm in a lack of it myself, i will try to make and compare dumps myself and keep you informed if i find anything useful....

would it be possible to use stream.php for videos aswell ?

No, because we never understood how subtitles were requested and streamed. Using stream.php for video would mean no subtitles.

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/20 09:49 can you give me a little inside how a video file is actually processed after the playlist is send to the player, i'm a bit confused since the playlist points to something like c:\mymovies\movie01.avi... ???

And another thing, has it a reason that
Code:

 HTTP/1.0 307 Temporary redirect

is send instead of HTTP/1.1 ??? you do already require 1.1 by using 206 Partial Content, and from what i read ...since many pre-HTTP/1.1 user agents do not understand the 307 status. ... it seems it would be useful sending it as 1.1 ??!!!

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/20 11:07 Try HTTP/1.1, no reason for 1.0. It could be that the latest firmware drops support for 1.0.

When streaming any file you have to consider that the player makes multiple requests for the file, probably for buffering purposes, hence the need to identify and reply with Partial Content. The stream.php is supposed to implement as much of the HTTP streaming protocol as required, but may not be perfect since we don't differentiate between GET and HEAD requests.

Edit: You should also try completely removing the redirect header as I never fully understood the reason for it to be there.

From what i can see in the wireshark log, it is never send anyway ??????
At least not with the november nor january firmware....

Actually, there is nothing helpful in the log at all

the differnce is the new firmware sends 3 HEAD request, the old one only sends one and then the GET....

while the first HEAD request (and the response to it are exacly the same)

so i am as far as before and have no idea where to look next

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/22 09:36 There is a new beta firmware today for the C200.
I installed the beta firmware and it plays everything. However, the are large delays before the files start to play.

I tested delays for following file types:
music: 20 seconds
Youtube: 2min30s
Apple Trailers: 5min(1080p) 6min30s(small)

There were no such delays on november firmware. I hope this gets fixed before official release.

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/22 14:40 Hi Guys,

I didn't notice that another threat was open for the C-200 firmware issue. I have just posted this in the "old" A200 threat:

A new betaversion of the firmware is being tested. It seems to fix the video playback, but audio playback still doesn't work (at least not on my C-200).
I have fed this back to the Syabas people - and they proabably need further "support" from a Swisscenter developer to fix this, too...

I find it interesting that audio works for Ossi, on my system it doesn't work (although video playback is ok again)
Any idea where this difference might come from?

Best regards

I had local videos playing fine with every firmware. Now also audio works, but it always takes a 20 second break before playing next song.

Audio worked right after fw update. No NMT (or any other) apps were running. Can't think of any other settings on C-200 that would affect the audio stream playback. There can be differences on web server (Apache/Simese) or some SwissCenter settings.

Hi,

thanks for the information I have tried it with switching off all NMT apps (as you desribed) - unfortunately with no effect, audiofiles are still not played.

What Simese version and Swisscenter version are you using?

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/25 04:56 Hi,

i had a quick walk with the beta firmware aswell...
the good news, i can access videos via swisscenter again...

The Drawbacks:
  • Accessing videos takes ages before they start playing
  • mkv playback is broken, the file starts playing after round about 30sec, after a few minutes audio vanishes, and after a few more minutes it looks like slowmotion playback
  • no matter which media type i play, after selecting until playback it takes very long

All Issues which didnt occour with the november firmware release

I guess i'll have a go with the new simese beta und make a few dumps, but i doubt that there will be anything useful in them, since my last wireshark analysis only showed a different behaviour from the PCH, which i couldnt investigate further since i dont know of any debug interface on the pch itself...

Did any of you experience a simular behaviour with mkv h264 ????

I'm using Apache on Linux and latest SwissCenter development build (1369).

The MIME type detection was broken on pch firmware and that was causing the delay. It has been fixed, but I don't know when it gets to a public firmware release.

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/01/30 08:31 I think there's no C-200 beta testers using SwissCenter. If there were, the bugs would have been found earlier.

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/02/13 08:23 I now have an A200 and see different issues with Apache and Simese.

Simese:
Video - OK
Audio - doesn't work
Photos - OK, but no audio playlist
Internet Radio - OK
Apple Trailers - doesn't work
YouTube - doesn't work

Apache:
Video - OK
Audio - OK
Photos - OK
Internet Radio - OK
Apple Trailers - doesn't work
YouTube - doesn't work

Another observation was that photos and Now Playing screens are not filling the screen, squashed horizontally. This is a PCH firmware issue.

It seems Simese is to blame for audio issues and further investigation is require for internet video.

Depends on what you want to do with it, and what you are comparing it with.

In my case I'm currently only using it for SD video so not tried any HD videos yet. The menus are faster to render than any of my previous players, due to faster processor.

As an EVA700 replacement I would say definitely worthwhile but have no experience of your EVA9150 so can't compare.

I now have an A200 and see different issues with Apache and Simese.

Simese:
Video - OK
Audio - doesn't work
Photos - OK, but no audio playlist
Internet Radio - OK
Apple Trailers - doesn't work
YouTube - doesn't work

Apache:
Video - OK
Audio - OK
Photos - OK
Internet Radio - OK
Apple Trailers - doesn't work
YouTube - doesn't work

Another observation was that photos and Now Playing screens are not filling the screen, squashed horizontally. This is a PCH firmware issue.

It seems Simese is to blame for audio issues and further investigation is require for internet video.

Hi Nigel,
sorry to tell you that you were a bit to hasty then, HD Videos (mkv), dont work since the first Jan Firmeware update for the c200 when streamed via Simese/SC, and from what i've heard the a200 has the same issues.
But good to see that you're on the boat now and are finally able to do some real debugging.
I'd be quite happy if you could keep me/us informed as soon as you have tested any hd content...

TIA & Greetings

As an EVA700 replacement I would say definitely worthwhile but have no experience of your EVA9150 so can't compare.

Many thanks

The EVA9150 does not have a html browser so does not do S/C at all, its there runing its own SMB based browser - won't go into why we have it but its a long story.

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/03/19 04:42 Hi Nigel,

have you meanwhile been able to pinpoint the cause for the "buffering delay" (about 10-15 sec between each audiofile) when playing audio with Swisscenter on the Popcorn C-200?

I have meanwhile switched to the most recent firmware for the C-200 released earlier this week (02-02-100214-19-POP-408-000), which should be comparable to the latest firmware for your A-200 - but no change on this issue, I still have this annoying buffering of 10-15 sec between each song (regardless whether I play an album or a playlist)

Has it something to do with Simese (rather than Swisscenter), and does not occur when using Apache as server tool?

Any suggestion would be very welcome, this Swisscenter would currently be the best audio playback tool for the new Popcorn series (if it ran properly)

Best regards

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/03/19 07:11 The buffering delay is due to SwissCenter sending the whole audio file before playback starts. I have managed to reduce this to a couple of seconds but am still not happy with it. I've compared with myiHome and there is no buffering between tracks which suggests it's possible to completely remove the delay.

I believe it's caused by SwissCenter not strictly following HTTP protocol. With myiHome the PCH will request 512K chunks of the file but with SwissCenter it requests the whole file and have not yet been able to determine the reason for this.

I've briefly discussed with PCH developers and they suggested it could be HTTP caching, which may (or may not) be an issue with Simese (or Apache config).

The C200 firmware is a release ahead of the A200, but you should now see that the original Now Playing screen correctly syncs audio and images. The developers kindly re-enabled this for us.

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/03/19 12:47 Hi,

thanks for the quick reply.

I am glad that you can at least reproduce the issue with your system.
Although the solution does not seem "straight forward", I am grateful that you are looking further into it.

Regarding the now playing screen, you are right the synchronisation works now properly again

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/03/21 05:02 Hi Pernod,

Currently on my setup I just keep getting an error message every time I try to play the audio on the A-200 which you seem to have been sucessful already in at least getting the audio to play. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to at least get the audio to play in the Simese setup?

As a test, I've also installed SwissCenter (1.22) on an Apache (2.2.1.5) server with PHP 5 (5.2.13) and mysql (5.1.44-community) on a separate machine. From that setup I was abe to play the audio on the A-200, but the behavior of the Now Playing screen was very strange. Although the audio was playing perfectly (no buffering issues), the information on the now playing screen was constantly changing to the next audio file. Pretty much every few seconds it would say it was playing the next song in line.

I would rather continue using Simese as it is more responsive and lighter than the Apache installation. Any tips would be appreciated.

thanks,
Daniel

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/03/21 08:05 I don't have audio working with Simese on the A200, details are in one the Simese threads. The Simese server responds with 500 Internal Error and am waiting for the Simese author to investigate.

As you know the Now Playing screen is not synced with the audio, this is now fixed in the latest C200 firmware which has not yet been released for the A200. The Enhanced Now Playing screen works very well though.

If this was the issue, should the delay depend on file size? I have same 20 seconds delay with both 97MB and 600kB audio files.

With November firmware, there was no delay. I was told late January it was a problem with MIME detection and PCH tries to determine file type from file headers. The patch didn't make to the next firmware.

Now with public firmware release of March 16, things have gotten worse: audio delay is still the same, can't play Youtube videos at all and Apple trailers don't start at least in an hour.

I have Apache 2.2.12, PHP 5.2.10, MySQL 5.1.37 and SwissCenter SVN 1391.

With the C-200 firmware of May I still have an delay of 20 secs between songs.
Has anyone a solution for this already. Else I really like to know how to decrease the lenght of this gap.

no i haven't, since i am not a betatester i dont have access to betas, i am just monitoring the thread on the forum to see whats coming up. While marco seems not available i still have high hopes they'll get fixed what ever they broke last year, since most of the stuff failing now on simese was working back then.

i managed to set up a xamp enviourment for sc, which so far works fine, at least with audio and HD content [didnt test stuff that works under simese anyway], but i couldnt make it share the mysql backend with simese (dont know how), and since without simese there's no upnp discovery my wife is not very pleased with my solution so i am currently having simese running while i'm not home, and xamp when i am around to bring her to the right menu...

we'll see what the next fw will bring, but it looks like they only addressed the gap/buffering issue, i still doubt that will fix the HD issues

Re: PCH-C200 (Jan 2010 FW) - 2010/07/09 07:51 Hi!

just an update, networkedmediatank is up again since a few days and there's a new beta out aswell, raising some hope's again:

[C-200] Firmware 02-03-100702-21-POP-408 Beta 2
(Release date : 5 July 2010, Firmware version : 02-03-100702-21-POP-408-999)
...
3. Video Photo and Audio playback
