VideoLAN - 2009/08/08 06:39 Does anyone use VideoLAN (VLC) on Linux?

If you do then do you know of any simple method of detecting where the vlc executable is installed and whether it's possible to detect the version number?

On a Windows installation this information is easily obtained from the registry so was wondering if something similar is doable on Linux?

Thanks.

Re: VideoLAN - 2009/08/09 18:02 Hi Nigel,

Yep, I have (I assume it has to do with ticket 201).

In this thread is described how an executable in linux can be found. I expect it will be:
Code:

 which vlc

or
Code:

 locate vlc

I'll give it a try tomorrow.

regards, Klaas

Re: VideoLAN - 2009/08/10 05:36 Thanks, can you post the exact output of these functions.

I really must get a VMWare image with Linux running sometime

It's related to alot of things, we may finally have a transcoding solution (if everything works as expected) which would bring all the latest features to our older players.

You may want to try Topologilinux. You'll get Linux within Windows; also possible to boot in an Linux environment. Works nice and smoothly.

Re: VideoLAN - 2009/08/10 09:26 Hi Nigel,

Linux command ‘which’ gives you the exact path to an executable, like vlc. I’ll give two examples: the first one is from my Synology Linux on which VideoLAN is installed, and a second one from my VM where VideoLAN is NOT installed.

example 1:
Code:

 Synologywhich vlc  /opt/bin/vlc

example 2:
Code:

klaas@topologilinux:~$ which vlc  whichno vlc in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr  /lib/java/jre/bin:/usr/lib/qt/bin:/usr/share/texmf/bin:.)

I hope this is what you’re looking for, if not, pls drop a line.

regards, Klaas
