Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2005/12/06 15:13 I use DVDdecrypter and AutoGK to make online copies of my DVDs as AVI's (using the DixV codec) - they generally play very well on the Showcenter 1000 and look excellent when encoded at a quality setting of 80%.

Occasionally the audio and video get out of sync by about a second or so, but the movie plays fine on the PC - so I guess it must be a problem with the showcenter itself rather than the encoding.

What tools do other people use?
What quality setting (or filesize) do you usually encode at?
What codecs do you find works best with your hardware player?

Rob

PS: If it would be of any use to anyone I could post a simple set of instructions for using the above programs...?
Player : Pinnacle Showcenter 200 and 1000 (wired ethernet)
Server : Windows XP Pro running on an Athlon XP 2200, 768 Mb RAM, 1.8 Tb storage.

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2005/12/12 12:22 I use the same programs

I encode in XviD to a file size of 1500Mb (for full movies) - all videos come out looking very good

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2005/12/12 15:50 I have tried a ton of settings to see what kind of compression would be acceptable on my TV ( Sony 65" HD LCD ). To be honest maybe I am one of the few who can see pixelation too easily.

I usually just take my DVDs and get rid of all of the addons, additional audio tracks ( just keep the DD 5.1 english ), etc.

I can live with a single file that is 3.5 - 4 Gigs.

If I could find something that would convert them to something smaller where I didn't notice a drop in visual quality or loose 5.1 audio, I might consider it.

What HW do you use ?

My ShowCenter 200 shows subtitles incorrectly at least for the DVD I tried yesterday. When I choose the correct VOB file, which contains the actual movie, subtitles come from another chapter where director of the movie tells something about how they did it .

Is this a ShowCenter F/W problem or do I need some trick to get them right ?

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2005/12/13 16:48 I dont have that issue, but I use a LP2...

Not sure what could cause that.

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2005/12/14 22:23 Human error , found the right subtitles. There were 11 different ones, whose order changed in every VOB file (6) of the movie.

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2006/01/09 16:10 Maybe I am missing something here but when I convert a dvd from dvd9 to dvd5 using dvd shrink I am left with a load of vob, ifo and bup files

How can showcentre know which ones are which? I just get a list of files when I try and play a movie. How does showcentre know that VIDEO_TS.VOB is episode one etc? Or more importantly how do I know?

DFFivx has no such problems.

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2006/01/31 09:33 I use DVD Shrink and only grab the main title (usually +/- 4 Gig). I use no compression at all and rip to one large VOB file. Then I use a program called VideoRedo Pro. I first started using this program when I was streaming through wireless. I was always running into sync problems. I read about the program on another forum. I think it was AVSForums. After running each VOB through the VideoRedo program, the sync problems disappeared. Now I am using a wired connection, but still run each VOB through VideoRedo. I guess habits are hard to break

It seems like about 20% of movies that I rip get audio sync issues. VideoRedo does the trick.

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2006/02/02 23:34 Tell you what....
I am on a PC running XP.

I use DVD Shrink to rip the DVD I want to archive. I do this so I can save wear and tear on my original disks and also to reduce the filesize so I can fit more on my storage.

I only copy the main movie and the 5.1 audio (or whatever you want to keep).
I use no compression and save it into a folder.
It then saves what you selected into that folder and within 2 other folders called AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS.
AUDIO_TS will be empty and all the files you need will be in located in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Now, I use a program called AVI.NET to compress and save the file in AVI format using either Xvid or Divx. I also click the box to save it with original AC3 sound (5.1 surround sound).

(you will also need Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 so AVI.NET can run) It is all documented on the AVI.NET website. (do a search for avi.net and you will find it)

AVI.NET has a 'quality factor' number that you can watch. The number is displayed and changes as you change the desired filesize.
They say a quality factor of '30' makes a very good quality video and I agree. the files are usually 1.25+GB in size. Anything above this '30' is just wasted bitrate...

OK.......
You rip what you want off the DVD and when finished run AVI.NET.
Open the VIDEO_TS folder and select the first file (usually VTS_01_1) and away you go.
AVI.NETwill read the file and then start playing it on the screen once it is all loaded...basically, what you see is what you get.
I choose 'custom size' and play around with file size until I acheive the quality factor of 30......
Once happy with the quality, choose 'Add Job' and then 'Start'.....

It will take about 3-4 hours depending on original movie size

(You can add more movies following the above steps and keep adding them without hitting start. Then you can batch them all at once if you like)

I have tried sooo many programs that I won't even go into it....
I post this so that hopefully I can save someone else all the trail and error.

I hope you find this useful...

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2006/02/08 13:50 I have tried many programs; however, I am totally satisfied with ImTOO DVD Ripper 4. If you have a TV series to convert, point it to your DVD drive or the files that you placed onto your harddrive, and it takes care of the rest. I have done a 1st season of a TV Show and by morning it converted the DVD's into .avi. Obviously, it does batch processing. I then play the files through the SC1000.

Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2007/01/18 13:01 I ripped my entire DVD collection with FairUse using the defaults set in the free program. Just enter the filename and away it goes and ends up with an AVI file Divx movie around 700mb. It uses only the main movie file so all the crap is cut out.

Video is great and no sound sync problems.

I have not yet been able to join these movies (tried MediaJoin and some others) without creating problems. Any advice in this area would be appreciated.

Re: Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2007/12/31 09:07 I Use mencoder with linux and works a treat.

Here is the command anyw3ay.

mencoder dvd:// -avc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1000 -alang en -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3 -o "<Output Filename>"

This works when you have a dvd in your drive.

If you have a dvd on you hard drive in a folder then use this command

mencoder dvd:// -dvd-device "<Location of DVD to VIDEO_TS/>" -avc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1000 -alang en -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3 -o "<Output Filename>"

This works perfect and gets the file down to about 900MB

Re: Re:Adding DVDs to your online collection - 2008/02/02 22:46 I have started using DVDFab Platinum and it works great. I convert to xvid + source audio. It uses less space and I don't notice any degration. Popcorn Hour connected to Panny TH-50PX77U
