I’m not convinced yet that replacing Apache by Litghttpd will have a better performance on the Synology CS/DS (with CPU 500mHz and RAM 128MB or more), however, it might be worthwhile to give it a try.

No, this is not necessary, you can have Apache running together with Lighttpd, however, you should move your SwissCenter VirtualHost from the Apache config file to the Ligthhpd config file (you can find the path in my previous post).
