direct video streaming? - 2008/07/31 16:46 Hi all,

As transcoding video streams needs (considerable) time for development (see here), it may be possible to start with “simple” direct video streaming comparable to the internet radio (bookmarks).

Although the playable streams will be limited by the media player in your system, it would be a nice addition to the SwissCenter; eg with the ShowCenter you’ll be able to play WMV-streams (others possible, but sure).

What I'm looking for is far more simple and can be best compared with the bookmarks in the internet radio feature, where you can paste video streams like Dutch latstest news ( http://cgi.omroep.nl/cgi-bin/streams?/nos/journaal/laatstejournaalBB.wmv ). Therefore I expect it doesn't work the same like the RSS-video which are completely downloaded

I expect the ShowCenter can play these kind of WMV-streams without transcoding.

Of course I'm also interested YouTube video, but I'm aware intergrating this option in SwissCenter is much more complicated then what I'm looking for at the moment.

Does this answers your question?

Well to make it easier for you, I’ve got four different streams; all have audio and video WMV 9 codecs, so I expect the ShowCenter should be able to play them without transcoding (or am I wrong).

I'm trying to work out a code to get the stream working in a PHP-file. Not as pretty as I would like, but it's a start ...

Whithin a PHP-code the following HTML-code could be inserted

Even though the video should be in a playable format it seems most streams use the mms protocol (or are redirected to a mms url) which players son't seem to support. The Delicast site is all mms too.

I know that (at least) ShowCenter doesn't play "mms"-streams, but I thought that "http" wmv streams should play.

Are there any VOD streams that play on a SwissCenter or other mediaplayer or is transcoding the only option?

This works for audio-streams most of the time on my PCH.

Some example streams that I have working trough the audio-bookmarks interface are collected from:

Never mind the RealAudio streams, use the mms-URLs and replace with rtsp:.

I've not tried this for any video-streams yet.

Re: direct video streaming? - 2008/11/16 09:12 Unfortunately, the "rtsp"-trick doesn't work with a SC. Also I tried "Shoutcast TV" (NSV-files), but also no luck ... in fact I couldn't any video stream get to work with SC ...

However, there must be a stream that works with SC without transcoding as both TVersity and VLC stream live video and VOD to the SC, but what kind of stream I still couldn't figure out.

Anyone any idea?

In the HTML link try:

Re: direct video streaming? - 2008/11/19 12:21 It's not the actual stream that's the problem, it's the mms protocol which the servers use to provide the stream. Our media players do not understand this protocol so are unable to communicate with the server to request the stream.

VLC knows how to handle this protocol so is able to retrieve the stream and forward the data to our players using http (which our players know about).

We have two options:
1. Use VLC to retrieve the stream.

2. Implement the mms protocol in PHP so that SwissCenter can forward the stream to the player. Players : Netgear EVA700 | Popcorn A-100 (091202) | Popcorn A-200 (100208)

Anyway, I would be in favour of the second option as VLC not the "easiest" streamer to work with (I'm wrestling and wrestling with it to get it streaming decently from my DS).

So, if the VLC-trouble can be avoided and we can have mms-streams with a PHP-solution, that would be great ...

Yes, if we can implement the protocol.

and we can have mms-streams with a PHP-solution
So all we need is someone to research the protocol and implement it. I've searched the web for a PHP solution but nothings exists

This has not been done before, maybe there's a reason for that

And I got video for both variants, but unfortunately no sound.

I've seen comments about that in the NMT forum, where the PCH would not produce any sound.
It was explained to be because the audio-stream was compressed with a low bitrate which the PCH did not want to accept and decode.

Hmm...
Now I can't even access that stream from Windows Media Player...
Do they block IP's from outside .nl?

Re: direct video streaming? - 2009/01/04 16:52 Well I've now got 'Internet TV' via SwissCenter. Of all the links I've tried none worked on my EVA700, but all worked perfectly on the PCH

I guess the EVA can't handle the rtsp protocol. I'll submit the changes later but I'd be surprised if any work on the SC. Players : Netgear EVA700 | Popcorn A-100 (091202) | Popcorn A-200 (100208)

What have I missed?

Re: direct video streaming? - 2009/09/06 14:28 Am currently working on a streaming proxy for the mms protocol. This should (hopefully) provide better compatibility of internet TV streams for our players, including SC, EVA, etc.
