dvd vobs on eva700 - 2008/09/25 04:51 Hi only me ! (lol) again

having fun tried to shrink a dvd on to hard drive last night got 4 Vobs about 1Gb big , thing is SC parsed it all very nicely but when i play the movie it plays the wrong section first. I would have though it would play them in the numerical order of the vobs?

Can any one suggest a useful utility to allow me to take my preowned dvd and select out the main movie section then compress this to a DIVX to allow me to archive it to watch on my multimedia player. Or maybe change the existing VOB program stream files into 1 continuous Mpeg2 file, as a compromise.

You should be aware im only running AMD athlon 64 3400+ 1Gb ram so maybe i should think about upgrading to a dual/quad core lol

Re: dvd vobs on eva700 - 2008/09/25 06:24 If you want something thats free I would look at handbreak or fairuse wizard

Re: dvd vobs on eva700 - 2008/09/25 06:28 Here's a good article from LifeHacker.com that lists the five best DVD ripping tool (plus a lot more in the comments!):

Re: dvd vobs on eva700 - 2008/10/31 06:42 hi i am looking again at doing this , the basic idea is to take my owned dvd and put it on the hard drive to play though EVA700 (for now).

what do you think is the best strategy for this in order to use hard drve space most effectively and retain as much from the original dvd as possible (if this is feasible). i would really just like to be able to have access to my dvds with out having to find them and physically put them into a dvd player.

I know the eva700 cant intepret dvd file structure but i could opt to play the main move either as an avi or a collection of same name VOBs , maybe the features could be put into a separate folder

i have upgrade to athlon x2 dual core so encodeing is a bit more realistic now

Any thoughts people??

Re: dvd vobs on eva700 - 2008/10/31 09:37 My personal recommendation would depend on how much space your have available...

If you have lots of space and aren't worried about each movie being upto 4Gb then rip the main movie to a single VOB file. This will ensure that you have the best quality rip (as not conversion is performed).

If you don't have so much space, then use something like Handbrake (from the lifehacker article) to convert the files to DivX or Xvid format. This will reduce the filesize to around 1Gb per movie and still retain most of the quality.

regards,
Rob

(BTW - I suggest DivX or Xvid as these formats play on nearly all the different network media players)
