Finger Trouble !! - 2008/05/18 06:36 BEWARE all those prone to senior moments. I did a stupid thing (that must be more than twice now !)

I'm running the latest versions of SC and Simese on WXPPro and have my media on an external USB2 device. I initially spent 2 days or so catalogueing / describing my media using the Edit Video/TV details options whilst my drive was seen as drive letter I: (allocated by Windows with no other temporary / removable devices plugged in). In order to decrease the risk of inconsistancy (due to additional removable devices), I manually allocated the letter S to the drive. No problems so far but you may guess what is coming ... I deleted the I: media locations, added the new S: media locations and searched for new media (without refreshing metadata).
You've probably guessed, I lost all my media descriptions.

Other than providing a warning of such a possibility when deleting media locations there is probably not a lot that is worth doing in software but I posted this so that others may not make the same mistake. There is one additional option I thought of that might be useful on the Media Locations page and that is - Move Media Location. I could have done this in SQL if I had thought of it before the deletion
With nothing further to lose, I'm now playing with SQL to discover quicker methods of applying new batch descriptions where applicable (the browser access thru' SC on my Athlon 1700 is very slow)

PS Am I wrong or are categories tied to media locations ? If they are then why ? The apparent method seems a bit clunky to me. Surely it would be better to include categories as part of the media description ?
At the very least it would be useful to have a check box to include / exclude sub-directories when adding media locations.

Tks for reading

What you should've done is Edit the media location, this will not remove your media from the database (unless the media doesn't exist at the new location).

There is work being done to allow export/import of video details.

Wow... the parsers didn't do most of the work for you? As someone who tests for these guys, I've lost the database info more times than I like to think about and I can't imagine spending that much time re-doing it. I feel your pain.

I'm not following this. The media locations are tied to the categories. If I have a category for "Music", I can have an unlimited amount of locations assigned to the category. How is that "clunky"
