Run as a service - 2008/03/22 19:56 Hi !
When I installed swiss center (the complete packag), I did not choose to run as a service and would now like to change the software so it WILL run as a service. Any way to do this without reloading the software ?

Thanks much !!!

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/23 07:16 It's possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. When you switch from using simese manually to using it as a service (or vice versa) the location where simese stores it's files changes and somtimes that can cause lots of problems as some files are picked up from the old location adn some from the new.

The best thing to do is:

1. In the config pages, save your settings to a file.
2. Completely uninstall Simese
3. Re-install Simese, specifying to run as a service when prompted.
4. Recreate your database (you'll be prompted when you run Simese)
5. Load your settings file created in step 2
6. Search for new media to re-populate your database.

P.S. Do I have a database or would I only have one if I manually told the software to create one ?? (You state to "recreate your database")

Thanks again !

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/23 09:33 When you uninstall Simese then it will remove the database that you have at the moment. When you re-install and run simese for the first time it will ask you if you want to create a database - just say yes.

Don't worry - it'll all make sense when you reinstall.

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/26 08:21 Good morning !

I did the reinstall as outlined in your note (removed the old ... reinstalled and told it to run as a service). I now see the SwissCenter service and it is set to Automatic and started. Yet, I still cannot select the SwissCenter on my Pinnacle 1000 until I actually log into the PC AND start up the Simple Media Center. I imported my settings (which were saved before I uninstalled the software the first time around). Am I still (maybe) doing something wrong ??

Thanks for your support !!!

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/31 08:49 Not sure if you caught my last post about Swiss Center not really starting as a service. Any help would be most appreciated !!!

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/31 09:28 You're sure that Simese is starting and running as a service correctly?

After logging in, try Start > Run > services.msc and then check to see that Simese is set to Automatic and is started

Secondly, you can edit the server details on your Showcenter 1000 and set it to automatically connect to the Simese/Swisscenter server without prompting you to choose a server (it actually works better this way as the startup time is much shorter).

If you still have problems, try posting to the Simese forum as that is monitored by Marco (the author of Simese),

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/31 10:17 Hello to Marco !
I'm sort of a computer "geek", so yeah, I'm sure the service is set to automatic and running. You can be very technical if you need to be with what I may need to do. The only thing I can think of is that I did an uninstall of the original install (not as a service), rebooted, did the reinstall as outlined in the previous communications and am wondering if something is messed up in the registry or files left behind ??? I still have to actually log in to get the SwissCenter to appear as GREEN on my showcenter 1000 (being a server I can then select). Prior to logging on, it is RED and not even able to be selected.

Thanks !!

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/31 10:30 One thing that I find very strange about the showcenter 1000 (and 200) is that it won't let you select and connect to a server that has been defined unless there is a green tick.

However, if that server has been edited to have the "Always connect to this server" option selected, then the showcenter will immediately try to connect to the server when powered on regardless of whether its green or red. If it fails to connect then it will just display "Press A to select a server".

As for running as a service - it could be that the broadcast message sent by the showcenter is being blocked by a firewall. I'm not sure which port the broadcast message is sent on though

Re: Run as a service - 2008/03/31 22:04 THANKS !!!! When I set the showcenter 1000 to always connect to the server, that did it ! Was just that option that needed to be updated. THANKS AGAIN !
