Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/10 14:30 As you can read in the 'slow browsing' topic, a new test version of Simese is available. A warning: so far every update had some problems which required an old version as a fallback. So only install it if you know how to restore a backup.

You can download the 2.6.2 version here. Use the 'program files'-only option in the installer to keep the old files.

If you have any issues with this version, please report them here.

Marco.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/10 18:21 YouTube works here but not Apple trailers, due to requiring the Quicktime user-agent being passed in the request.

No other obvious issues so far, will keep it under observation.

Edit: Correction, YouTube works with PC browser but not on the Popcorn. I'll investigate further and report back.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/11 14:15 Can someone try to replace this dll? It won't be final but it gives me a hint if this is accepted by de PCH.

Can someone explain me the problems with the Quicktime user-agent? I see some 'ini_set('user_agent', $user_agent);' calls, but doesn't this work anymore?

Marco.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/12 07:51 I didn't have any success with the new dll, couldn't get it to run. Seems as though it was ignoring my Simese.ini as I don't use the default port and root folder so nothing opened.

I did some analysis using HTTP Debugger and it looks as though Simese is sending the correct user-agent, so not sure where to look next.

Simese 2.5.10 works as expected and from what I understand the only changes in 2.6.2, apart from fixes, is the way in which PHP is being used (exe vs dll) so maybe look for potential issues there?

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/13 13:27 Confirmed,
I'm happy with this version. Anyway I cannot watch Internet TV and YouTube, as I am using a Snazi* 1350, which is anyway not able to perform this tasks.
Speed is compared to 2.5.10 fantastic!

Thanks Marco.
Maybe you still can find a solution for the Popcorn- and SC- users ...
They would be happy then as well.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/13 15:48 not sure if this is a bug or if it was windows playing up, but could not get any responce out of the system, so used simese client to shut down the service, but it refused to restart.

Went to the services window, and noticed that next to simese it had 'Stopping' writen, and would not let me start it back up again

The system is rebooting itsself now, which is taking some time as its going through the disk check etc, and as i only have remote desktop access it will be a little while until i get access again, so can't post logs yet, but if anything comes up i'll post back.

Memory use was under control and windows was reposnding normal, just could not get any connections to the server on port 8080

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/17 06:02 Stopping the services if a PHP scripts runs is a problem. The current timeout of PHP is a very long time (and in a quick test it seemed like it didn't stop anyway) and I haven't searched for a 'terminate' option.

The Youtube and Apple playing is a problem for me. Without a PCH it is not easy to debug. I think I'll buy the A-200, but I don't know if it is compatible with Swiss. If someone has a PCH in Almere (The Netherlands) which I can use for a few hours....

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/18 04:18 That's not easy. The PHP calling method is completely different and it's not comparable. One thing I can do is create a binary dump of everything which is written to the client for both the old and the new version and see if the difference makes sense. I'll look at this in a few days.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/24 09:00 If have a version 2.6.3 here.

A few changes:
- It updates the Windows firewall
- You can switch between old and new style PHP calling
- A minor bug (but maybe important) to the content-length header in php files
- an option to dump the data to a file

If you install this version you should be using the new PHP calling style and nothing has changed except for the content-length fix.

Switching between old (CGI) and new (DLL) style:
Update the simese.ini and add a line under [Common]
; PHP Calling method: DLL or CGI
PHPCallingMethod=CGI

Restart the Simese server to use the new style.

The client has an option under 'Advanced': Server output logging (debugging). Select this option and enter an output directory. This will dump everything which is sent to the client to that directory. When the server starts, the file numbering is reset to 0. Any existing file will be appended. So empty the debug directory between tries.

If there are still problems with the Apple trailers, please make a dump for both the CGI and the DLL version and see what's the difference.

Marco.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/24 09:56 Another (minor) patch in 2.6.4. After testing a PHPBB forum with the new PHP I noticed some pages did not work as expected. It seems this was caused by the REQUEST_URI parameter. The DLL version added the query parameters to the parameter. This was a change compared to the CGI version. And since it breaks stuff, I guess it is wrong.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/24 10:45 Hi Marco..

Ok... installed 2.6.4 and the youtube and apple trailers did not work. I added the php calling method to the simese.ini and the youtube videos now work but the apple trailers still do not.

I will try and get more information for you..

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/01/24 11:05 Thanks for testing. I wonder if the Apple trailer problem has something to do with a new PHP version. The 2.6 is released with PHP 5.2.12.

Well, if you can put together a 2.6 with php 5.2.9 I can certainly test it.

Also, with 2.6.4 while individual youtube videos appear to play fine the playlists aren't working.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/02/02 16:40 Yes - well it works for me.

The SVN update only updates the swisscenter files, and not simese.

The update to 2.6.4 updates the simese program files, so any version of swiss center works ontop of it.

Marco has even kindly put an option in the 2.6.x setup program to install program files only - which keeps the swisscenter files and the databse intact.

Then simply select upgrade to latest SVN and it will update the swisscenter files for you

If i install last beta 2.6.4 i must change the simese.ini:

Update the simese.ini and add a line under [Common]

or not ?

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/02/04 02:45 If you just install the new version, it uses the DLL version. If you want to try the 'old style PHP calling, you need to add the PHPCallingMethod=CGI

One thing I noticed so far is the PHP_SELF variable is not set. This will be included in the next release.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/02/13 12:35 I'm troubleshooting the cause of audio issues with my A200 by comparing Apache (which works) and Simese.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/02/15 03:50 Hi Nigel,

good to see that you now have access to a 200 series pch, have you already tested hd mkv's with it against simese/sc ???
These arent working since the 1st January firmware update for me anymore, while with the novemver release (c-200) they work just fine.

what happens is, firstly it takes much longer before the playback starts, then after a few minutes i loose audio and after a few more minutes, playback is as in superslowmotion....

Would be great if you could give me a quick feedback if you have the same issue with the a200 ???

Then it's exacly the same effect i'm experiencing, the weird thing is this worked perfectly with simese on the november firmware for the c200, so it seems its not a simese issue alone, but a combination of the new fw and simese....

Thanks for testing and confirming that its not just me...

do you think this can be solved by solved by marco anytime soon, or should i get myself ready for installing apache on all of my serving machines ???

Just curious.. is this apache version the apache for Windows?

I'm sticking with Simese for now as version 2.5.10 is working just fine for me but might be looking to snag one of these new players.

Yes, I have it serving the same SwissCenter files/db as Simese for comparison purposes.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/03/04 03:57 Hi Pernod,

I know this isn't really helpful to this thread but I've tried running 2.6.2 and 2.6.4 on my Windows home Server machine and unfortunately I'm not seeing much of a speed increase over 2.5.10 - it still takes 5 to 10 seconds after selecting a folder. Is there anything I've missed configuration-wise?

thanks

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/03/04 18:59 Simese 2.5 only ran slowly on some configurations, others had less of a problem. However 5-10 seconds for a load up can occure - it depends on your player etc.

Can we have some info on your setup - what player are you using, whats the spec of your server etc.

Also a level 8 (not 9) log may help as well.

James

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/03/11 13:19 Hi Marco,

long time no hear

Any progress in the SIMESE problems with Youtube and Apple trailers?
I switched to the HDX now, and they seem not to play.

Thanks for information.

Re: Testing Simese 2.6 - 2010/03/12 14:02 Just a note that all features do work with Simese version 2.5.10. It is just a little slower on some systems.

So only go with the 2.6 beta if speed is more important than the ability to use those two features.

All my 720p videos with DTS audio in mkv container play perfectly... with Apache. But with Simese the audio will soon drop and then video starts to stutter. Sounds like Simese is consuming more bandwidth than Apache for some reason.

This issue still resists in the current firmware for the c-200 (the nov firm from last year didnt have this issue though) so i really hope marco will soon resurface with a new version of simese....

he hasnt been around for some while now...

and i didnt manage to setup apache for the sc yet, so i dont know if it will work with 1080p aswell (Nigel ???)
